How LocalPCP works
Sources, inclusion rules, ordering and limits of the LocalPCP directory.
Sources
Registry: the complete CMS NPPES monthly file of November 2, 2026. 395,141 active individual NPI records have a qualifying specialty taxonomy and a primary practice address in the 50 states, DC or Puerto Rico.
Medicare activity: CMS Medicare Physician & Other Practitioners by Provider and Service, reporting year 2024. 160,806 listed physicians have at least one publicly disclosed row.
Distances: U.S. Census Bureau 2020 Gazetteer ZIP Code Tabulation Area centroids. Where an office ZIP has no Census centroid (for example a hospital or PO box ZIP), the city’s average centroid is used and marked approximate.
Ordering
Listings are alphabetical, or by approximate distance when you search by ZIP code. No physician can pay for placement. Medicare volume is shown for transparency and never used to rank.
What is not verified
An NPI record does not confirm an active license, board certification, current practice, insurance participation, hospital privileges or appointment availability. Registry specialties and addresses are self-reported and may be outdated.
To check a license, use your state medical board or DocInfo from the Federation of State Medical Boards. To check board certification, use Certification Matters from the American Board of Medical Specialties.
Patient reviews
Patient ratings appear only from moderated reviews submitted on this site. Every genuine review is moderated under the published review policy, and no rating is invented, imported without permission or hidden for paying practices.
